Curriculum Overview
Noah Webster Academy follows the standards and objectives established by the Utah State Office of Education. To help teach these standards and objectives, NWA has chosen the following programs. For more information about a program, please follow the link to the program's official website.
Reading/English Language Arts
Our chosen curriculum for reading and ELA is based on the Science of Reading. We use McGraw Hill's Wonders program for ELA in K-5th and EB Academics for 6th grade. Reading Horizons is used to teach phonics for beginning readers. We also have a variety of novels that scholars may read during the school year.
Science
Scholars receive hands-on opportunities through science exploration and study. Science is one of the favorite subject at the school. Teachers teach science concepts from the State Core Standards as well as Core Knowledge.
Social Studies
Teachers teach social study concepts from the State Core Standards as well as Core Knowledge. Engaging lessons teach scholars about the world around them.
Math
We use a complete, PreK through 12 curriculum that carefully sequences the mathematical progressions into expertly crafted modules called Eureka Math. Eureka provides educators with a comprehensive curriculum, in-depth professional development, books, and support materials. This coherent approach allows teachers to know what incoming students already have learned and ensures that students are prepared for what comes next. When implemented faithfully, Eureka Math will dramatically reduce gaps in student learning, instill persistence in problem solving, and prepare students to understand advanced math.
Ability Groups
Noah Webster Academy ability groups for reading, math, and spelling. These groups allow for scholars to learn at their ability level for optimal learning and growth. Our 3rd and 5th grade classes are currently piloting a program that has them receiving instruction in their homeroom class all day with grouping on Fridays during What I Need time (WIN).
Character Education
Leader In Me
The Leader In Me is a program based upon principles found in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Dr. Stephen R. Covey. The program teaches essential life skills and strengthens characteristics of successful leadership, providing students with relevant tools and self-confidence to be prepared to meet future challenges and endeavors.
Bucket Filling
Bucket Filling has become one of the most popular and effective character development programs. Every character trait (kindness, respect, responsibility, trust, fairness, and citizenship) becomes more tangible when the action is described as filling a bucket. At Noah Webster, scholars are taught and encouraged to fill others buckets by using actions or words that show that you care about someone, saying or doing something kind, giving someone a smile, using names with respect, helping without being asked, giving sincere compliments, and showing respect to others.
